This film looks like it could be a good one, but for some reason after watching the trailer I felt reminiscent of the movie “Titanic.” Anyway have a look. Set to be released in the U.S. in mid 2011.

Blog 346- Dirty Dancing (1987)

Oh what a classic. When I was a kid, my sister and I wore this VHS out. So this movie was a little bit of a cheat because I’ve seen it so many times but I just couldn’t resist. I believe this film was shot as an independent film that when it came out into theaters became a blockbuster hit. If you can’t already tell, I’m a sucker for love stories and this one tops my list. A young and pre-nose job Jennifer Grey plays “Baby” Houseman who goes on vacation with her family to a mountain resort where she meets rebellious dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swazye). Baby and Johnny become closer when Johnny’s dance partner is forced to miss a dance performance to have an abortion. Johnny teaches Baby how to dance and rebel, and Baby teaches Johnny how to love. (corny I know). I love, love, love this movie. What can I say, “I had the time of my life.”

I have always been a fan of claymation. I grew up watching Gumby and Pokey, and Paddington Bear, so I when I saw this film I was jolted back to my childhood. No matter what age you are, this film will make you laugh and smile without even knowing it. The story is about the man and dog team, Wallace and Gromit, and their adventure with the mysterious Were-Rabbit that is terrorizing their village’s crops. Wallace and Gromit team up to find this pesky creature before it eats all the crops and sabotages the annual giant vegetable growing contest. If you need a laugh and a good movie to snuggle up on the couch to, this is a good pick.

Blog 348: The Dreamers (2003)

Unexpectedly sexy is how I would describe this film. Set in Paris in 1968 against the student riots, a young American, Matthew, meets and stays with a French brother and sister, Isabelle and Theo. Their adventures while staying in Isabelle and Theo’s parent’s home involve their testing of each other’s avid film knowledge and unusal sexual encounters. There is something strangely attractive about this film that makes me watch it over and over again.

This is a raw and disturbing film directed by Larry Clark. The story revolves around a group of teenagers living in New York whose lives are plagued with alcohol, drugs, and HIV. This film birthed the careers of Chloe Sevigny, Justin Pierce, Rosario Dawson, and Leo Fitzpatrick. You really have to be in the mood to watch this film, because it can easily depress you. I would recommend at least seeing it once.

Based on a true story about Barbara Daly Baekeland, heiress to Bakelite plastic, and her son, Antony’s, strangely close relationship. The film recounts their travels through Europe as Antony grows into a homosexual man. There are a few parts that are hard to stomach. Played by Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne, featuring Hugh Dancy and Stephen Dillane. This film was long and unfulfilling, with a shocking and incestuous ending. It was ok.

Blog 352: The Children’s Hour (1961)

Based on a stage play by Lillian Hellman, two female school teachers of an all-girls school are accused of being lovers. When a student overhears a conversation one evening, she tells her grandmother. When the word spreads about the two teachers, parents take their children out of the school. The film never directly address homosexuality, but is greatly hinted at. Some of the best performances I’ve seen from Audrey Hepburn and Shirley McClaine. Nominated for several Academy Awards and a win for Shirley McClaine for Top Female Dramatic Performance, this is a must see.

Favorite movie of all time. This movie is the most real version of love i’ve ever seen. When the womanizer in a small town in North Carolina meets his best friend’s sister, he sees her as more than a one night stand. As their relationship turns into more than just a friendship, they learn that love is bittersweet. A relationship of raw, mindless love featuring Zooey Deschanel and Paul Schneider.
